Guide to Better New Year’s Resolutions

The year is about to come to a close and people are starting to think about their New Year’s resolutions. While I don’t have an issue with the concept of: new year, new me!, this thought process often sets people up for failure.

Instead of saying we will change everything, let’s create some SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timed) goals together! After all, failing to plan is planning to fail as Benjamin Franklin said so well.

The first step is to think about changes you’ve already made. Think back and write down all the amazing changes you have made already. This will help create a mindset of: I’ve got this!

Then think about where you want to be in the future even if that goal is still a few years out. You’re creating a little timeline or multi year plan here.

When you imagine your future, what do you see? And which of these things are you ready to get started on? If you see yourself at goal weight, eating healthy and running a marathon, a good start might be to eat healthier or start exercising/running in general.

If you want to start eating healthier, start small. Don’t go into healthy eating all or nothing. Instead, identify what makes it hard for you to eat healthy?

Don’t know? Here’s your first New Years goal: Start a journal to track your food choices. Note any circumstances that make you choose healthy food and those that make you choose not so healthy food!

If you already know, create a realistic plan to eating more healthy meals. Maybe decide each meal should have at least one vegetable. Or choose to eat at least one healthy meal a day. Find something that fits into your routine and is a small change.

And don’t forget to set yourself deadlines for reevaluation of your goals. At the end of January, check in with yourself and see how you’ve done: did you do good on your goal, then it might be time for the next step.

Are you struggling with it but overall doing well, then keep going for another month.

And if you’re struggling so much it wasn’t doable, think about why you failed and come up with a new goal.

New Years resolutions fail because people go from 0 to 100 on January first. But making reachable goals is good for your journey. You just have to be honest with yourself and keep your goals attainable! Does anyone already know what their New Year’s Resolution is going to be?? We want to know!!

    I want to track Dalit and exercise daily. My A1C is too high so I have to take care of myself
